A young white-tailed deer wandered onto a crowded Lake Michigan beach Saturday, joining swimmers and sunbathers like he was part of the crowd.

The small buck was perfectly at ease around the humans at Saugatauk Dunes State Park and people were equally at ease with him, although some were quite amazed by his sudden appearance.

“He’s just enjoying himself here,” Katie Papke said in a video she posted of the incident on social media.

Papke said the deer hung out for about 30 minutes before wandering off.

“He enjoyed licking a little girl’s legs and ruffling through another’s beach bag for snacks,” she said.

Papke wondered whether the deer had been driven out of the woods by the Fourth of July fireworks, whether he was acclimated to humans or just a naïve young deer.
