Wisconsin mom killed in road rage shooting while teaching son to drive, police say

According to WISN-TV, Tracey Smith, 46, of Milwaukee, was teaching the boy how to drive Friday near the intersection of Capitol Drive and 51st Street when a vehicle struck their car, police said.

"This stemmed from a minor accident that occurred. The passenger of the vehicle that was hit got out and confronted the driver of the striking vehicle," Milwaukee police tweeted Monday. "Words were exchanged, and the [driver] of the striking vehicle pulled out a firearm and shot the passenger, who is a 46 year old female."

Police said Smith's son drove his mother to a nearby hospital. Doctors there pronounced her dead, WISN reported.

The suspect, identified only as a 35-year-old man, was arrested after he fled the scene, according to WISN. No further information was immediately available.

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections, where Smith had worked for more than two decades, called her death a "senseless act of violence."

"Sgt. Smith courageously served Wisconsin communities for 23 years as a member of the DOC, and her contributions to the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility (MSDF) will be felt long after her passing," Kevin A. Carr, the department's secretary-designee, said in a statement. "Today, I want to express my sincere condolences and stand in solidarity with Sgt. Smith's family, friends and co-workers."
