Neighbor tries to douse flames inside house

A neighbor taking out trash near his home on Retford Drive noticed a family across the street running out of the house after their home caught fire early Thursday morning.

Jason Jones rushed into the burning home with a bucket of water, hoping to put out the flames, he said. When Jones entered the home he found heavy smoke and was not able to put out the fire, he said. Jones said he believed the fire started in the kitchen of the house.

Firefighters responded to the house fire at 5135 Retford Dr. around 1:30 a.m. When first crews arrived on the scene they were able to knock down the fire quickly, Jefferson Township Batallion Chief John Filson said.

No injuries to the six people who lived at the home were reported, according to firefighters.

A cause of the fire is still under investigation.
