Harder today for parents to balance work, home?

In my reading this week, I came across a couple news stories about American parents.

On the front page of Thursday’s New York Times, reporter Jodi Kantor profiles a mother — newly off public assistance — who works at Starbucks. The hours she’s been scheduled to work have fluctuated widely, with her receiving notice only a few days in advance. So the woman has been scrambling for childcare and unable to commit to classes to complete her associate’s degree in business. Starbucks, like many businesses, uses software to determine work schedules for optimizing its operations.

Also, Thursday, NPR reporter Jennifer Ludden reported Thursday that more American dads want paternity leave “but just 10 to 15 percent of employers offer paid paternity leave, almost all in white-collar professions.”
