OPINION: The statues debate continues

Seems the debate about the propriety, and the future, of Confederate monuments isn’t going to fade soon. This came in from reader Tom Billing.

“I find Frank Abernathy’s comment appalling. He does not take into account that the war was fought over slavery. No one ever mentions that when a country is defeated in war, their statues often are torn down. Remember when the U.S. overthrew Saddam Hussein? His statue was destroyed instantly by the people. Where are the monuments and statues for the Nazis in Germany?

"I notice many Confederate flags flying in Ohio. This was especially true during the Obama presidency. Many are still there. The last time I read the history of the Civil War, Ohio was a part of the Union, fighting the Confederacy. We cannot change history, but we need to not glorify traitors such as Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson, etc., who chose to fight against the U.S., which is an act of treason. These statues are hardly going to bind the nation's wounds."
