Sermons about politics

Many American clergy use the pulpit to address social and political issues, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

Nearly two-thirds of churchgoers said their religious leaders in recent months have brought up at least one of these topics: religious liberty, homosexuality, abortion, immigration, environmental issues and economic inequality.

In general, the clergy’s positions expressed on religious liberty and abortion are in line with political conservative views, while positions on immigration and the environment reflect political liberal thinking. The positions expressed about homosexuality and economic inequality are split.

One in 10 said their clergy encouraged supporting or opposing a candidate. Most often, Hillary Clinton was supported and Donald Trump, opposed.
