To tie or not to tie

Sharing more reader reaction on the slackening of office wear. This from Chris Pomfret:

“Society has been, and still is, at a juncture as to whether ‘to tie or not to tie’ and it is always a preoccupation for men before going to any event. The basis of the dilemma is that the tie is not a functional clothing item; it’s more of a decoration and is used by many to portray their character or mood. But the larger issue: what to wear to anything? Why do we have the obligation to dress up in impractical ‘black tie’ and tuxedos for weddings or other formal functions?

“I proffer that we dress out of respect for the quality of the event. If one values the relationship with a business partner, or customer, or date, etc., then we make the effort to show that value by dressing upwards from how we’d dress if there were no factors influencing us. So, for me, a tie is a statement of respect or appreciation and a way of ‘decorating’ our appearance.”
