Police were notified Wednesday by an Atrium Medical Center social worker that a 16-year-old boy in its psychiatric unit had been abandoned by his mother and the hospital was unable to treat him without her consent.
The boy’s mother left him in the care of a friend in May, and he had stayed with friends until his aunt agreed to care for him, the police report said.

When the boy was taken to Atrium by his aunt for some “mental issues,” the hospital needed to reach his mother so she could give verbal consent for treatment, according to the report. Police were unable to locate the teen’s mother at her last known Middletown address or phone number.
Police contacted Butler County Children Services and officers advised they were executing a removal of the teen and awarding custody of him to his aunt so he could be treated at Atrium, the report said.
Police left a message with the teen’s mother on her voice mail not to have any contact with her son.
