9 reasons Dayton’s biggest school district made news this past month

The Dayton Public School district is one of the largest in the area with about 14,000 students. Some of district’s schools, students or staff have been in the news recently due to crime, internal investigations, or firings.

Here is a closer look at some of the stories that this newspaper has reported on from mid-April through this week.

1. Fired DPS coach had prostitution related conviction  - May 13

A classroom aid and track coach was arrested in 2014 on a solicitation charge on Wayne Avenue. Donte Murphy worked for DPS from August 2014 until this spring when he was fired.

2.  Principal chases gun-toting teens out of school May 11

Three juveniles were apprehended Wednesday after they entered Wright Brothers PreK-8 with a BB gun. The gun was undistinguishable from a real firearm and the school was placed on lock down.

3. World of Wonder stabbing - May 6

Last week a 7-year-old was stabbed on the playground at World of Wonder school by an unknown male assailant. The 2nd grader suffered from a collapsed lung but is expected to make a full recovery.

4.  DPS teacher accused of showing R-rated films -May 6

An internal investigation has begun involving a teacher from Horace Mann Elementary. The teacher allegedly showed two R-rated films to a class of sixth graders.

5. DPS looks for missing football ticket money -April 8

Five Dayton Public School’s home football gate receipts from the past two years are missing. According to an internal audit more than $14,000 from ticket sales “have been misplaced.”

6. Ward out as superintendent -April 13

Due to failed attempts to reach a contractual agreement between DPS and Superintendent Lori Ward, Ward will be leaving this summer. Ward was the superintendent when the district’s test scores, 2014-15, had the worst performance index in Ohio.

7. DPS teacher under investigation - April 13

A teacher at Valerie Elementary has been placed on administrative leave after allegation of an altercation with a 6-year-old student. The mother of the student says she plans to press charges against the teacher.

8DPS to replace treasurer this summer -April 14 

Craig Jones who has been the treasurer since 2013 will not be returning for the 2016-17 school year. The Dayton school board decided not to renew Jones’ contract after it expires on June 30.

9. DPS could face a state takeover -April 14

Dayton Public Schools are at risk of the Ohio Department of Education instating an Academic Distress Commission. DPS would have to receive an “F” on the state report card for 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18 to have the ADC instated.
