The highest-paid worker in 2016 was a police sergeant whose pay included $9,485 in overtime pay, as opposed to 2015 when city manager Bryan Chodkowski whose 2016 gross pay of $104,601 was the only six-figure salary either year. Chodkowski abruptly resigned early last year and later took a job in another state. Former fire chief Mark Carpenter was promoted to replace Chodkowski in September.

An I-Team investigation this year found the ability to cash out unused sick and vacation leave is a rare perk in the private sector, though local governments are on the hook for tens of millions of dollars worth of these payments.

Local governments make payroll with your money, which is why the I-Team has assembled and made available a searchable database of pay for public employees.

The five highest-paid Riverside employees last year were:

1. Adam Colon, police sergeant: $96,332

2. David Crigler, police sergeant: $93,906

3. Mark Carpenter, city manager: $90,153

4. James Vance, police officer: $89,243

5. Rhetton Close, police major: $88,737
