Shooting incidents at military facilities have sometimes been deadly

Here are a few of those incidents:

Fort Hood, 2009

On Nov. 5, 2009, Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas, killing 13 people and wounding 33 others. It was the deadliest shooting at a military base up to that time.

Army Reserve Col. Kathy Platoni of Beavercreek was directly on site during the shooting and told this publication in 2009 about her experience.

“It’s probably the most difficult thing most of us have ever been through in our lives,” said Platoni, 57, a clinical psychologist who maintains a private practice in Centerville.

Platoni said 13 of the injured soldiers were in her unit.

She said her unit was deployed to Afghanistan 30 days after the shooting.

Hasan was shot and paralyzed from the waist down during the shooting and later sentenced to death.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, 2011

A shot was fired as a man attempted to kill himself at the base hospital in 2011.

The shooter, a retired Army Sergeant Major, appeared to direct the bullet at his own body but wasn’t harmed in the incident.

Members of the 88th Security Forces Squadron responded to the scene, and the individual — who was described as appearing intoxicated and distraught — surrendered.

Navy Yard, 2013

On Sept. 16, 2013, a shooter killed 12 and injured three others at the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington D.C.

“Unfortunately the loss of lives is a reality … but you don’t expect that in your own backyard,” Commander Dominic Jones, a Springfield Native, told this publication in 2013. “If it happened at Fort Hood it could happen anywhere.”

The shooter, Aaron Alexis, was shot and killed by police.

Fort Hood, 2014

Four people were killed and 14 were injured in another mass shooting at Fort Hood on April 2, 2014.

The shooter, 34-year-old Army Specialist Ivan Lopez, killed himself after driving to various locations around the base.

“It just shook me to the core,” Platoni said in 2014 of that shooting. “There’s that feeling of such powerlessness and I can’t do a thing about this except reach out to my friends who survived the massacre.”
