Shroyer Road in Oakwood to close for a week

Shroyer Road in Oakwood will completely close for about a week, starting Wednesday, Oct. 4, so the roadway can be repaved, according to city officials.

Contractors for the city of Oakwood have been working on the Oakwood portion of Shroyer all year, changing it from a four-lane road to one lane in each direction with medians and turn lanes in the middle.

In recent weeks, traffic has been limited to one lane in each direction as those medians are installed, with a complete closure in one spot near the Oakwood-Dayton border by Dellwood Avenue.

City roadway foreman Dave Shuey confirmed the Oct. 4 closure of the entire Oakwood portion of Shroyer, from Gainsborough Road in Dayton, south to Dorothy Lane in Kettering.

“It’s going to be an extended closure. It’s possibly going to be a week,” Shuey said. “It’s going to be a complete closure for milling and paving operations.”

Many drivers use Shroyer to connect Kettering with the University of Dayton area, and with Wilmington Pike heading north into Dayton. Drivers can use Dorothy Lane and Patterson Road to detour west to Far Hills Avenue, which runs parallel to Shroyer. Or they can use Wilmington Pike and Dorothy Lane to go east around the closure.

Oakwood’s $1.26 million Shroyer project is funded 60 percent by federal transportation money and 40 percent by the city. Oakwood officials decided to make the changes — which include bike lanes and pedestrian crossings — after a 2016 study raised safety concerns.
