Freezing rain New Year’s Eve, Winter Weather Advisory for New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day will start with freezing rain and a Winter Weather Advisory from 4 to 10 a.m. Friday for Butler, Greene, Logan, Montgomery, Preble and Warren counties, and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Champaign, Clark, Darke and Miami counties, issued by the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Freezing rain will begin late New Year’s Eve. Although accumulation will be light, one-tenth of an inch or less, it won’t take much to create slick road conditions, particularly on bridges, the NWS said.

On New Year’s Eve, it will be mostly cloudy with a high near 37 degrees during the day, which will fall to around 29 degrees at night. Showers and freezing rain are expected to start around midnight and last into the pre-dawn hours. The freezing rain could cause layers of ice and make slick spots on the road.

New Year’s Day will be rainy, with showers continuing throughout the day and even a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Rain chances will lessen after night falls and drop away around midnight.

Temperatures on New Year’s Day will be much higher, with a high around 52 degrees and a low of around 44 degrees.

Saturday will be calmer, though temperatures will hardly rise from the overnight low. The NWS predicted there will be a high around 47 degrees.

Saturday night, though, there will be a chance of rain again throughout the night as temperatures continue to fall to around 36 degrees.
