Space limited for West Carrollton citizens fire academy set for spring

Residents of West Carrollton will have a chance this spring to learn more about fire safety operations in their city.

A citizens fire academy will give up to 12 adults who live or work in West Carrollton a five-week opportunity to interact with some of the more than 30 fire department personnel while getting more familiar with processes and procedures, according to the city.

“We hope to keep the participants engaged and active by providing lots of hands-on opportunities to learn about the department,” West Carrollton Fire Chief Chris Barnett said in statement.

The academy will cover a variety of topics ranging from fire extinguisher training, to auto extrication and medic transportation, according to the city.

Participants will also spend time at fire stations riding with the fire department to emergency calls and learning about fire investigations.

Other topics will include an overview of the department’s financial budget and organizational structure, hose and ladder deployment, medic equipment and fire tools, and fire prevention programs.

The academy – now in its second year - will start April 9 and run through May 7 on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at Fire Station 56, 125 W. Central Ave., according to the city.
