Coronavirus: Cincinnati Reds encouraging players to avoid handshakes, physical contact with fans to avoid spread

The Cincinnati Reds are enforcing Major League Baseball’s policies of restricting Clubhouse access and avoiding physical contact with fans amid coronavirus fears.

The Reds working with local health agencies and officials in Ohio and Arizona to ensure the safety of players, staff and fans, Vice President of Media Relations Rob Butcher said in a release. MLB is working with the CDC, national public health organizations and government agencies to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Players were encouraged to avoid personal contact with fans during the balance of spring training. Butcher said that it was to be determined whether the policies would be extended into the regular season.

In a recent press conference, Governor Mike DeWine recommended the cancellation of parades and outdoor gatherings taking place around sporting events. Butcher said that the Reds would not cancel any events associated with Opening Day on March 26. but they would revisit the situation as Opening Day approached.
