Dangerous cold prompts opening of warming centers throughout region

UPDATE @ 8:06 p.m. (Jan. 30): Dangerous wind chills throughout the region are expected in the coming days, and with wind chills as low as minus 40, areas will be opening warming centers.

A Wind Chill Warning means the combination of very cold air and wind will create dangerously low wind chill values. Frostbite also can occur quickly and even hypothermia or death if precautions aren’t taken.

In Butler County, the following locations will be available:

  • Butler County Sheriff's Department lobby, 705 Hanover St., Hamilton, available at night
  • MidPointe Library System, 125 S. Broad St., Middletown, open normal business hours
  • MidPointe Library System, 1 Tennessee Ave., Monroe, open normal business hours
  • MidPointe Library System, 200 Edgewood Drive, Trenton, open normal business hours
  • MidPointe Library System, 9362 Centre Pointe Drive, West Chester, open normal business hours
  • MidPointe Library System, 7100 Foundry Row, Suite S-234, Liberty Twp., open normal business hours

In Champaign County, the following locations will be available:

In Clark County, the following locations will be available:

  • In Springfield, the Champion City Vineyard Church, 137 E. Main St. The 24-hour drop-in center will remain open through Friday morning.
  • In Springfield, National Trail Parks and Recreation District offices, 1301 Mitchell Blvd. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.
  • The Springfield Soup Kitchen, 830 W. Main St. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
