Track hoe falls into hole in river

A track hoe working in the Great Miami River in Dayton Monday Sept. 20 fell into a hole partially submerging it. The operator was not hurt.

Heavy equipment has been mining gravel out of the river, located south of the Stewart Street Bridge, to use as fill in the ongoing Interstate 75 construction project.

Efforts to remove gravel for construction on I-75 caused other problems on the Great Miami River this summer.

Incorrectly marked city sewer lines were ruptured by construction crews Sept. 1, causing raw sewage to leak into the Great Miami River. Repairs were estimated to cost taxpayers at least $20,000, but the spill did minimal damage.

A telephone call to Ruhlin Co. Monday afternoon was not returned.
