UPDATE @ 6:40 a.m.

State troopers have once again shut down all northbound lanes of I-75 at Ohio 41 in Troy.

Troopers said a tow truck is now on scene to remove the semi involved in the crash, and requires all northbound lanes to be shut down.

It’s not known how long the highway will remain shut down.

UPDATE @ 5:50 a.m.

The driver killed in this morning’s crash has been identified as a 20-year-old white male from the Troy area, according to Lt. Joseph Gebhart, with the Ohio Highway Patrol Piqua Post.

The crash occurred at the south end of the construction zone, and traffic had slowed down due to the construction, Gebhart said.

The driver failed to stop and his pickup truck collided into the back of a double trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was uninjured.

The driver did not brake, but tried to swerve to avoid the trailer, Gebhart said. It is unclear if excessive speed is a factor; the speed limit is 70 mph through that stretch of I-75, Gebhart said.

Gebhart said the semi driver is being cooperative.

“He was stopped in traffic,” Gebhart said. “He was doing what he was supposed to be doing. Unfortunately, he was struck from behind. … At this time, it appears the (pickup driver) just wasn’t paying attention.”

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, Gebhart said.

All lanes of northbound I-75 were closed, but state troopers reopened the far left lane at 5:50 a.m. The right lane remains closed.
