Hawkins, Lawrence R. "Larry"
Lawrence "Larry" Hawkins, 92, passed away on October 20, 2023 at his daughter's home in Fremont. He was born on February 16, 1931 in Sidney, Ohio to the late Raymond and Hazel (McGowan) Hawkins. He spent his early years on small farms near Sidney and graduated from Sidney High School with the class of 1949. After graduation, he went on to attend Miami University on a football scholarship where he was coached by Woody Hayes and Ara Parsieghan. He graduated from Miami in 1954 with a degree in Business Administration and received a commission in the United States Navy Supply Corp. He reported for active duty by attending disbursing training in Athens, GA in 1954. Upon graduation he was assigned to be the Central Disbursing Officer in the Navy Regional Accounting Office in New Orleans. He was the first Ensign to be assigned to any NRAO where he disbursed millions of dollars on the Navy's behalf. He was discharged from the Navy in 1956. Larry's work career included 30 years with the NCR Company in Dayton, Ohio in various training positions. When he retired in 1988, Larry's final position was Director of the Computer Science Institute.
In 1960, he married Jane Joslin in Fenton, Michigan. She was a registered nurse and spent over 25 years at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She preceded him in death in 1994. Before her death, Larry and Jane split their time between National City, Michigan and Babson Park, Florida. After her death, Larry continued to be a snowbird, spending over 30 half years in Florida. During those years, he was a volunteer in the AARP Taxaide Program, assisting several hundred taxpayers annually with their IRS tax returns.
His children will remember his love of football, especially the Ohio State Buckeyes and Pittsburgh Steelers. Larry also enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and seeing his grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lori Earnhart of Fremont, Ohio and James (Sierra) Hawkins of Castalia, Ohio; grandchildren, Jacob Earnhart, Andy Earnhart, and Torey Welk; great-granchild, Sutton Marie Earnhart; and sister, Flo (Bob) Stock of Naples, FL.
Larry is preceded in death by his wife, Jane; parents, Raymond and Hazel; and siblings, James Hawkins and Dorothy Moore.
Per Larry's wishes, there will not be services held at this time.
