Reasons to dine out during Winter Restaurant Week

The major headline in local dining coming up in the next few weeks is Dayton’s Winter Restaurant Week, happening Jan. 24-31.

It’s an opportunity to sample the best that local restaurants have to offer in the form of three-course meals priced at $20.16, $25.16, or $30.16 at participating restaurants all over town.

The popular promotion serves diners well, offering them the opportunity to try new dishes and locations at a special price. In turn, restaurants are able to get in front of a new audience. As an overall feel-good bonus, a portion of the proceeds helps raise money for charity.

SNEAK PEEK EVENT

Kicking the week of dining celebrations off is the Sneak Peek to Winter Restaurant Week happening Jan. 20. Tickets are $20.16, and $28.16 (includes a wine tasting) for the event being held at White Allen European Auto from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Last year the event sold out, so get your tickets now if you think you might want to attend.

It’s an event that I almost always attend. It’s a great way to sample many of the dishes that will be served and see familiar faces. This year, Basil’s on Market, Coco’s Bistro, El Meson, Figlio, Jay’s Seafood, Meadowlark, Nibble’s Restaurant, Sea Jax Tavern, Station House and Wheat Penny will all be on hand offering ticket holders a sneak peek of the gastronomic goodies they are planning for Restaurant Week.

HISTORY LESSON

This promotion was established in 2006 as a way to generate interest during a traditionally slow time for restaurants with challenging weather and a lull after the holidays.

Its popularity both with restaurants and with diners led to the Summer Restaurant Week event.

“I think more and more people in the area are learning about Restaurant Week, and once they hear about it they get excited and tell their friends,” said Amy Zahora, executive director of the Miami Valley Restaurant Association. “With the majority of our restaurants that participate being independents, it’s a wonderful way to really support the restaurant community. We are blessed to have so many fantastic and unique restaurants in the area.”

Last year, Zahora says 8,988 Winter Restaurant Week meals were sold.

If you are out and about during Restaurant Week and discover something you love, be sure to shoot me a note and a photo. We’d love to feature some of your favorite dishes in upcoming coverage!
