Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Luis Castillo was named to the National League All-Star team for the second time in his six seasons Sunday.

“It’s kind of a surprise,” Castillo told reporters at Great American Ball Park through an interpreter. “I don’t really even believe it yet. I’m trying to take it all in right now. I know that there are several other players that are having fantastic years as well, but it’s an honor for me to get back to the All Star Game.”

Castillo will be the only player representing the Reds at the 92nd All-Star Game, which will take place July 19 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. This is the first time since 2009 when Francisco Cordero earned the honor the Reds have had only one All-Star.

Brandon Drury was left off the roster. He leads the Reds in hitting (.277), home runs (18), doubles (18), RBIs (50) and runs scored (53).

The Reds completed a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday with a 10-5 victory but own the second-worst record (32-54) in the National League.

Castillo (3-4, 2.92 ERA) has allowed three earned runs in 20 innings in his last three starts.

Castillo, 29, made the All-Star team for the first time in 2019. He was 15-8 with a 3.40 ERA. In his career, he’s 43-53 with a 3.64 ERA in 135 starts, all with the Reds.

“It’s very exciting,” manager David Bell said. “Our team is thrilled for Luis. It’s a huge deal in any player’s career, but I think what stands out is Luis has taken his game, his pitching to a whole new level — a new level of focus, a new level of really being great. I think he’s one of, if not the best, pitcher in all of baseball right now.”
