Dayton’s Donoher to be inducted into Hall of Fame on Friday

Don Donoher, the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach in Dayton Flyers history, will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday in Kansas City, Mo.

Donoher, 83, learned he would be inducted in February. He joins a class that includes: Ohio State’s John Havlicek, Indiana’s Quinn Buckner, North Carolina’s Charlie Scott, Long Beach State’s Ed Ratleff, Kansas State’s Rolando Blackman and coaches C. Felton “Zip” Gayles, of Langston University, and Lou Henson, of Illinois.

Donoher was 437-275 in his career. He coached from 1964-65 to 1988-89. As for the timing of the honor, Donoher said in February he thought Dayton’s Elite Eight appearance and success last season helped.

The best he could figure, Donoher said, is “it was time for the Hall of Fame committee to lift a glass to the University of Dayton Flyers.”

Dayton reached the NCAA tournament eight times in Donoher’s 25 seasons. He guided the program to the NCAA tournament in his first three seasons. They lost to UCLA in the 1967 national championship game.

“The storied tradition here, although it goes way back, it kind of goes through him,” Dayton coach Archie Miller said. “In his 25 years, he put Dayton in some unbelievable light in terms of the basketball program and the fan base. He’s responsible for all that. To hear of his recognition is awesome for the university, awesome for he and his family and great for our program.”
