Second Thoughts: Flyers not fatigued as A-10 title comes into view

Knucklehead of the Week

Keith Olbermann knows it all, except how to behave on Twitter. The abrasive ESPN yapper will be back on his show Monday after serving a suspension for his Twitter skirmish with Penn State students who took part in a dance marathon. The annual event raised $13 million for pediatric cancer research and care. Great job, dancing kids. One excited student sent Olbermann a text saying “We Are!” with links to coverage of the event. Olbermann responded with “pathetic” and proceeded to insult whoever dared cross him. Another in a long line of bridges Olbermann has burned during his career.

I went grocery shopping last week because I’m a nice guy. Of course, I improvised and built on Jill’s list. I came home with too many snacks, but did show tremendous restraint by passing on the chocolate-dipped banana Twinkies. Really, Kroger has those.

Great win by UD on Saturday at VCU. I figured after Kendall Pollard fouled out with about five minutes to play the Flyers' odds of winning were about the same as Meryl Streep demanding a balanced federal budget. In other words, zero. But the Flyers were not fatigued (everyone's favorite excuse when they lose) and prevailed 59-55.

UD rolls into Tuesday’s showdown against Rhode Island at 22-6 and is in position to lock up a good seed in the NCAA tournament (better than 8 or 9). UD Arena will be rocking as one of the best stories in college basketball rolls on.

Mat Latos did what a lot of people have been doing for years when he questioned the leadership in the Reds clubhouse. The former Cincinnati pitcher ripped the team on many fronts. If it's true players shop online during games and sleep in the clubhouse, that's ridiculous.

Maybe Latos’ critique will be the wake-up call this usually comatose team needs to contend. Joey Votto’s been talking tough. Now maybe he’ll play tough.

The Brian Gregory Watch is on. The Atlanta media are calling for BG's ouster at Georgia Tech, which is 19-50 in the ACC under the guidance of the former UD coach. Rick Pitino called Gregory "one of the top 15 basketball coaches in the nation" after Louisville rallied to beat Tech last week. Pitino's nose immediately grew two feet.

An ill-timed AAU tryout held by Xenia's former girls basketball coach led to suspensions for some girls whose teams were still in the state tournament. There's plenty of blame to go around here, but the kids' parents should know their girls can't dip their toes into the seedy AAU waters until the season ends.

Trending up: Josh McCown, Xavier Rathan-Mayes, Kevin Garnett. The Browns signed McCown as a stopgap until they know whether Johnny Manziel can play. McCown has thrown only 61 TD passes in a 12-year career (59 interceptions), so Cleveland isn't printing playoff tickets today.

Trending down: Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose, Josh Hamilton. Rondo got traded from Boston to Dallas, but his surly reputation followed him to Big D. Last week he was suspended after screaming at his coach. Rondo will be a free agent soon, but who would sign this guy?
