2017 SEC Country Power Poll (Week 5): LSU, Tennessee take a tumble

Just when the SEC Country Power Poll voters thought they knew how this season’s pecking order in the SEC was shaking out, Week 5 happened.

LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee all suffered embarrassing defeats that won’t soon be forgotten. How bizarre was this week in SEC football?

Texas A&M scored 17 unanswered points to close out a 24-21 win over South Carolina — and both teams climbed three spots. The Aggies are No. 5 this week, and the Gamecocks moved up to No. 8.

LSU lost to Troy, 24-21, ending a 49-game winning streak against nonconference opponents. The game wasn’t as competitive as the final score might indicate, as Troy led 24-7 with just over eight minutes left. The Tigers dropped to No. 10 in our poll.

Mississippi State (3-2, 1-2) now bears little resemblance to the team that routed LSU by 30 two weeks ago. The Bulldogs slid two spots to No. 7 after a 49-10 loss at Auburn (4-1, 2-0), which holds fast at No. 3 in the SEC Country Power Poll.

Amid all that chaos, Alabama and Georgia are providing some semblance of order in a conference otherwise gone mad.

The Crimson Tide (5-0, 2-0) are once again a unanimous top choice, having earned every first-place vote every week this season. Coming off a 59-0 rout of Vanderbilt in Week 4, Alabama crushed Ole Miss, 66-3. It marked the first time since 1945 that the Tide scored 50-plus points in consecutive SEC games. No. 2 Georgia (5-0, 2-0) hammered the Volunteers, 41-0, to capture victory No. 800 in the program’s history.

Meantime, there is no truth to the rumor that Troy is being considered to replace Missouri in the SEC East. Mizzou (1-3, 0-2) remains last after a bye week.
