2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where South Carolina is ranked (Week 4)

Even though South Carolina lost, 24-17, on the road to Texas A&M, the Gamecocks jumped several spots in the SEC Country Power Poll released Sunday.

The 27 voters in the SEC Country Power Poll elevated the Gamecocks from No. 11 to No. 8. Most of the teams behind South Carolina didn’t fare well in Week 5. Two teams behind South Carolina in the poll (Ole Miss and Tennessee) suffered lopsided losses, LSU was upset by Troy, Vanderbilt lost to Florida, Arkansas beat New Mexico State and Missouri didn’t play.

Sophomore quarterback Jake Bentley completed 17 of 30 passes for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Gamecocks fell to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the SEC. His touchdown strikes went to freshmen wide receivers Shi Smith and OrTre Smith for 45 yards and 13 yards, respectively.

Though South Carolina had a 17-7 lead late into the third quarter, Texas A&M came roaring back with a 17-0 run.

“Offensively and defensively, we’ve got to finish,” coach Will Muschamp said. “You’ve got to credit A&M. They made the plays when they needed to, on both sides of the ball. We’ve just got to finish better.”

This weekend, South Carolina returns home to Williams-Brice Stadium for a showdown with former SEC West crossover opponent Arkansas. On Sunday, the Gamecocks opened as a 2.5-point favorite over the 2-2 Razorbacks.

“We need to restart and refocus on Arkansas,” Muschamp said. “They’ve got a good football team coming back here to Williams-Brice on Saturday, and that’s what we need to do. We’ll switch our attention to them [Monday] morning.”
