2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where Vanderbilt is ranked (Week 5)

After a 3-0 start against nonconference opponents, Vanderbilt has skidded off track in back-to-back losses to SEC foes.

On Saturday, the Commodores put up a good fight but fell to Florida for the 26th time in the past 27 meetings, 38-24. Prior to that was a disastrous 59-0 loss to No. 1 Alabama on Sept. 23.

After the defeat in Gainesville, SEC Country Power Poll voters slotted the Commodores (3-2, 0-1) at No. 11, down two spots last week and five rungs below their season high. Vanderbilt had opened the 2017 season at No. 13, improved to No. 11 after Week 2 and rose to No. 6 after beating Kansas State on Sept. 16.

Commodores quarterback Kyle Shurmur threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover against the Gators, and wide receiver C.J. Duncan made five receptions for 75 yards. On the defensive side, linebacker Oren Burks had 15 tackles for Vandy.

“I felt like our guys fought,” Duncan said. “I think that’s why this one hurts so much. … There’s no moral wins in this game and in this conference.”

Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason sees Saturday’s performance as a step in the right direction, but he’s hardly satisfied by the result.

“This football team responded today,” Mason said. “It wasn’t the right response — we wanted to win, and we didn’t get it — but they did respond.”

Next up for the Commodores is a home date against Georgia (5-0, 2-0), which is ranked No. 5 nationally and No. 2 in the SEC Country Power Poll. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET (11 a.m. CT), with the television broadcast on ESPN. The Bulldogs bludgeoned Tennessee 41-0 in Knoxville on Saturday.
