UCLA-Texas-women's NCAA Tournament preview

UCLA meets Texas on Friday in a Sweet 16 showdown in Kansas City.

The Bruins ran over Creighton 86-64 to get to the Sweet 16 and Texas beat UCLA’s Pac-12 rival Arizona State 85-65 to advance. Both teams come into the Friday game playing well.

“I’m just so proud of our players,” UCLA coach Cori Close said, per The Associated Press. “We’ve talked a lot about sustaining our focus and our identity for 40 minutes and not only did we do that, but we did that against a very good team in Creighton.”

No. 2 Texas and No. 3 UCLA will be meeting for the 13th time on Friday. The series is deadlocked at 6-6.

Texas is led by junior guard Lashann Higgs, who averages a team-high 17 points a game. UCLA is led by Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year senior point guard Jordin Canada.

Canada told DieHards that the team believes it can go to the Final Four and beyond. UCLA is two wins from reaching the Final Four in Columbus.

The winner Friday will take on the winner of No. 1 Mississippi State versus No. 4 North Carolina State in Kansas City on Sunday, March 25.
