Oklahoma State-Western Kentucky: Preview, keys to the game

The Cowboys will host their third consecutive NIT game after notching earlier victories over FGCU and Stanford.

Oklahoma State’s defense has been strong in the NIT, limiting opponents to 38.5 percent field-goal shooting. The Cowboys have forced an average of 18.5 turnovers in the first two games and notched a combined 43-24 edge in points off turnovers. Their bench has also been strong with a 34-17 combined edge in the NIT.

And Carroll has averaged 22 points per game in the NIT, extending his string of double-figure scoring efforts to eight.

Against Western Kentucky, the Cowboys must rebound better. Stanford hammered them on the backboards, 55-40. Oklahoma State also has struggled shooting in the NIT,  hitting 38.5 percent from the field.

Coach Mike Boynton’s team has played well in the tournament after finishing tied for sixth in the  Big 12 regular season.  They appear motivated  to make their first trip to the NIT semifinals in New York City since 1944.

Western Kentucky closed the USC game with an 18-8 run to advance to the quarterfinals. It marks the Hilltoppers’ third  Power 5 win after beating Purdue and Boston College earlier this season.

The Hilltoppers under Coach Rick Stansbury, who was Mississippi State’s head coach for  14 seasons and is in his second season at Western Kentucky. They have notched their most wins this season since the 2007-08 team won 29 games. They have also  produced eight road victories.

Their offense features a tough inside game that leads to a lot of free throws. The Hilltoppers have made 578 free  throws this season and their opponents have attempted 362.  In their victory over  USC, Western Kentucky hit 16 of 17 while the Trojans missed 11 of 19.

Oklahoma State faces smart offensive team

Stansbury’s team takes good shots, ranking 12th nationally in field-goal percentage (49.5 percent), 14th in free throw attemptts (808) and fifth in fewest personal fouls (14.5).

Johnson averages 9.6 rebounds per game to rank 27th nationally. He also is 17th with 15 double-doubles this season.

The game on Wednesday will be the first time the two programs have ever met. Western Kentucky’s last game against a current Big 12 member came on March 13, 1987, with a 64-62 triumph over West Virginia  in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
