AFC pro personnel director on Antonio Callaway: ‘Just too many headaches to deal with’

Antonio Callaway’s full potential was never realized in Gainesville, but there’s little doubt an NFL team will give him a chance to do that. One person doesn’t think his particular franchise wants any part of Callaway.

Callaway led Florida in receiving in 2015 and 2016, while also showing off big-play ability on special teams with 2 punt return touchdowns and another on a kickoff.

There was never any doubt about his talent, but an off-field issue took him off the field completely last season as he was implicated in  credit card fraud. Callaway had multiple other incidents in his time with the Gators, eventually declaring for the 2018 NFL Draft after not seeing the field in his junior season.

One unnamed AFC pro personnel director says those issues will deter his team from taking a gamble on him despite his tremendous talent, according to NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein.

“Really natural athlete and pretty good player but there are just too many headaches to deal with so I can’t see us taking a chance on him. Our owner will say no and I don’t even think we would put him on our board to be honest.”

The 5-foot-11, 197-pound Callaway has been training in Atlanta for the upcoming NFL combine, which will take place from Feb. 27 to March 5. He’s one of six Florida players who were invited to participate in Indianapolis.

Callaway is rated as the No. 28 receiver in the draft class and is projected to go between the fourth and sixth round, according to Walter Football.
