UCLA was looking for an Arizona sweep but the Sun Devils had other ideas.
Arizona State denied the Bruins of a prosperous trip in the Grand Canyon State. The Sun Devils defeated UCLA 88-79 in Tempe. UCLA coach Steve Alford said Arizona State’s guard play was the difference in the ball game.
“Those three guards got away from us,” Alford said, per ESPN, via the Associated Press. “Those three are really talented guards who had it going.”
Arizona State’s senior guards accounted for 62 points in the win. Shannon Evans II led the way with 23 points, Tra Holder put in 22 and Kodi Justice added 17.
The Sun Devils went on an 18-4 run late in the first half to go into the locker room up 40-32 and never looked back. Arizona State has a good chance of reentering the top 25 following a successful week.
Instead of UCLA getting an Arizona sweep. The Sun Devils swept both L.A. schools. Arizona State defeated USC on Thursday and then continued their momentum on Saturday night against the Bruins.
“Our confidence is high and that’s what’s willing us right now,” Holder said. “If we keep shooting the ball well, the sky’s the limit and we’re going to be that team we were in the nonconference.”
Next up for Arizona State (19-6) is Arizona on Thursday.
The good news for UCLA is that the Bruins are currently on the right side of the tournament bubble due to the big win over Arizona.
UCLA take on Oregon State on Thursday.
