Arizona State WR John Humphrey out for season

The Herm Edwards era at Arizona State suffered its first blow on Thursday morning, when it was announced that wide receiver John Humphrey will miss the 2018 season with a torn achilles suffered on Tuesday in practice.

He was scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday.

Humphrey had a magnificent debut as a Sun Devil, catching seven passes for 123 yards and a touchdown in his first game, a win over New Mexico State. Injuries hobbled the remainder of the season, causing him to miss four games and serve in a limited role in the few others in which he played.

Wide receivers Frank Darby and Terrell Chatman are expected to compete for Humphrey’s starting spot. Darby caught nine passes for 234 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 2017 while Chatman caught just one ball for eight yards.
