The Arkansas-Alabama game Saturday night is important for both teams, and the outcome is tainted no matter what happens.
That’s because the proverbial bomb that was dropped in college basketball earlier this week. Alabama freshman guard Collin Sexton is among the names allegedly implicated in an improper benefits investigation into the sport. As of Friday night, Sexton was expected to play the Crimson Tide’s game against the Razorbacks.
Alabama needs him. Sexton is one of the best freshmen in the country. He averages 18.4 points per game. On top of that, Alabama is, in a manner, reeling. Losers of two straight, the Crimson Tide are right next to Arkansas, pretty much, when it comes to projected seeding for the NCAA Tournament.
Whichever team wins Saturday is almost assuredly “in” when the field is announced on Selection Sunday.
Arkansas needs it just as much. The Razorbacks are not going to be favored in any of their remaining games. Not until the SEC Tournament, at least, if even then. If the Hogs were to steal one on the road against a team considered, by most, superior to the Razorbacks, the deal is done. A loss and, at some point, Arkansas is going to have to nick a team it won’t be predicted to beat.
Hopefully, the college basketball revelations don’t district too much and we all get a game between two teams that know what is at stake.
