Arkansas-New Mexico State keys to the game

1. Don’t overlook these Aggies

New Mexico State isn’t the pushover it has been in recent years. The Aggies already have two victories through four games, putting them halfway to matching their highest win total in over a decade. They’ve won two rivalry games (New Mexico and UTEP) and both losses (Arizona State and Troy) were close games. The Aggies can challenge the Hogs, particularly if the home team tries to sleepwalk through this one. That’s certainly a concern coming off an emotionally draining 50-43 overtime loss to Texas A&M a week ago. If the Hogs haven’t shaken that one off in time to get excited for New Mexico State, they could be in trouble.

2. Defending the playmakers

New Mexico State’s strengths lie within its playmakers on offense. At quarterback, Tyler Rogers isn’t likely to be overwhelmed. He’s played in tough environments before and is capable of putting up yards on any team if allowed time to throw. Jaleel Scott is his go-to wide receiver, and at 6-foot-6, he’s a tough cover for any defensive back. Then there’s running back Larry Rose III, the Aggies top player. Rose averaged 116 rushing yards per game the past three seasons and is coming off a game last Saturday against UTEP in which he rushed for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tackling him will be key as he’s one of the best backs in the country at creating yards after contact.

All three players are seniors who are certainly relishing the opportunity to upset a Power 5 team for the first time in their career. The Hogs are their last opportunity to get that done. If all three aren’t contained, this game could be much closer than envisioned.

3. Protect Austin Allen

The Hogs offensive line has had a rough time protecting quarterback Austin Allen this season, a theme that has continued from last season. He’s already been sacked 11 times in three games and rarely has a clean pocket to throw from. If the Razorbacks can’t protect him against New Mexico State, all hope is eliminated that they may do so against upcoming SEC opponents.
