AUBURN, Ala. — More unsettling events unfolded for Auburn basketball over the weekend.
Center Austin Wiley, who was
sidelined by a stress fracture during the Tigers’ trip to Italy in early August, is back in a protective boot.
Despite the recent arrest and corruption allegations brought against associate head coach Chuck Person — two unnamed players
were involved in a complaint from the federal government — head coach Bruce Pearl said the injury is “all basketball related”
and has nothing to do with the ongoing investigation.
The sophomore started to feel discomfort in his left leg during a workout on Saturday. Pearl, who was celebrating the Jewish
holiday Yom Kippur, was not present.
“There was not an incident that created the pain,” Pearl said. “He began to feel the tightness, the soreness and the pain
and so we shut him down. So he doesn’t remember any kind of an incident.”

Wiley did not practice on Monday or Tuesday, instead watching from the sidelines. Pearl said X-rays on his leg came back negative,
but Wiley would get an MRI on Wednesday.
“So we’ll learn more about some pain he’s having in his leg,” Pearl said. “And we’ll see what’s going on with that.” Pearl
and his athletic training staff haven’t determined if the current injury has anything to do with the stress fracture Wiley
was dealing with at the end of the summer.
The future is still uncertain for Auburn basketball. Pearl would
only take basketball questions once again
after publicly acknowledging he stood by the statement the university issued and called the alleged conduct in the criminal
It seems there’s a chance two players involved in the corruption scandal could be deemed ineligible in the coming months,
but right now Auburn basketball players and coaches are doing everything possible to block out “the noise.”
“Right now, everybody that’s out there is eligible,” Pearl said. “And that’s how we approach it.”
