Auburn basketball promotes Chad Prewett to interim assistant coach in place of Chuck Person

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn basketball has found at least a temporary solution to combat the absence of associate head coach Chuck Person.

Director of basketball operations Chad Prewett was promoted to an assistant coach, head coach Bruce Pearl said on Tuesday afternoon.

“Right now we’ve elevated Chad Prewett to an assistant coaching position,” Pearl said. “And what ever we do, it’s a temporary situation and that temporary could last a while. Right now, we’ve elevated Chad.”

Prewett is a fourth-year staff member on Pearl’s staff and was promoted to director of basketball operations in April. Before that he was a special assistant to Pearl. He joined the program in June of 2014. He will continue to handle all of the duties that also come with being the director of operations.

“He can do both,” Pearl said. “We all multitask. I do a lot of basketball operations stuff…He will continue to do the a lot of the operations stuff as well.”

Regardless of how the staff evolved in the coming months Pearl said Auburn’s young players are still the focal point.

“The other thing too as far as being an assistant coach right now, our focus is this team,” Pearl said. “We have no seniors. Our focus is this team. We have a strong focus on the 2019 class as well. There’s not a tremendous injury to have assistants be focused on recruiting. We’re starting practice right now so were all in on this.”

Pearl himself is continuing to concentrate on his team’s defensive efforts. That entails pressure and transition defense and now adding drop-back defense to the mix, too. Auburn’s hope is to “take advantage of our personnel a little bit more.”

Despite the concerning news about center Austin Wiley’s injury (and looming MRI) and the promotion of Prewett, Perl said he’s been pleased with his team through the early days of practice in Auburn Arena.

“I think they’re practicing really hard,” Pearl told local media. “You guys were here. You guys saw. They’ve got great energy, I think they’re working on trying to get better and they’re doing the best they can to not be distracted by the noise.”
