Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Auburn Tigers football recruiting notebook with Auburn recruiting beat writer Benjamin Wolk. It’s Tuesday, and SEC Country looks at three Mississippi prospects who will be at Auburn this weekend.
Auburn to host top DE who recently de-committed from LSU
Jaren Handy’s last few weeks have been a whirlwind.
The 4-star defensive end from New Augusta, Miss., committed to LSU on March 3. SEC Country LSU recruiting reporter Sam Spiegelman wrote in detail about that commitment after a conversation with Handy. Handy hinted that the recruiting pressure from other schools picked up shortly after that pledge to LSU.
“Everyone has come after me even harder … everybody,” Handy said at the time. “I’m committed, but my recruitment is open. It’s really early in the process. Everyone has been texting me.”
One of those major pushes: Auburn.
Handy de-committed from LSU on March 15, less than two weeks after his commitment. He wanted to keep his options open and take more recruiting visits this spring before finalizing a decision.
Handy, like with many Mississippi prospects, has a close relationship with Auburn defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson. Woodson had been working to get Handy on campus this spring. In fact, Handy originally planned to visit the Plains on March 3 before a last-minute switch to LSU. He committed on that visit.
With Handy uncommitted, Auburn isn’t waiting to re-enter the picture.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end will make his first Auburn visit this weekend, he told SEC Country. Handy is ranked the No. 7 strongside defensive end nationally and the No. 95 overall recruit.
Handy won’t be the only Mississippi prospect on campus this weekend. As I wrote in this notebook Monday, 5-star linebacker Nakobe Dean is still listed as a maybe for the weekend as he travels to the Atlanta Opening regional. Top-50 defensive end Nathan Pickering also is considering a weekend visit.
Two Mississippi prospects, however, are confirmed: Charles Moore and Jamond Gordon.
Moore is committed to Mississippi State. He’s also a top-1oo prospect, ranked as the No. 6 strongside defensive end and No. 84 overall. Gordon is committed to Ole Miss. He’s the No. 33-ranked weakside defensive end in the nation.
