Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Auburn Tigers football recruiting notebook with Auburn recruiting beat writer Benjamin Wolk. These notebooks will now publish in the evening Sunday through Thursday. It’s Sunday, and Auburn hosted five top targets over the weekend. Take a look at each. Plus, it’s about to get busy for the Tigers.
Auburn hosts 5 impressive visitors
In comparison to weekends to come, this weekend was intended to be somewhat of a down weekend on the recruiting front.
That is until you look at the full lineup on campus.
Spring practice begins next weekend, which will bolster on-campus recruiting this spring (more below), but that didn’t stop Auburn from hosting several top 2019 targets the weekend before its next junior day. Five prospects made their way to Auburn over the course of the weekend, including a few ranked inside the top 150 nationally.
- 4-star T Xavier Truss, Bishop Hendricken (R.I.), No. 99 overall
- 4-star G Keiondre Jones, Callaway (Ga.), No. 132 overall
- 4-star T Jaelin Humphries, Mountain View (Ga.), No. 219 overall
- 4-star WR Zion Puckett, Spalding (Ga.), No. 241 overall
- 4-star OLB Mikel Jones, IMG Academy (Fla.), No. 307 overall
Truss was the highest-rated of the group, so let’s start there. The 6-foot-7 offensive tackle from Rhode Island made his final visit of a southeast excursion to the Plains. In the days before, Truss visited Clemson, Alabama and Georgia. With Auburn’s immediate need for offensive tackles, Truss’ interest in the Tigers shouldn’t come as a surprise. He spoke with Jason Caldwell of Inside the Auburn Tigers and said he was “blown away” by the surprising trip to the Plains. Truss picked up an offer on the visit and would like to return.
Keiondre Jones has been a regular visitor to Auburn the last year. He attended at least two Tigers’ games during the 2017 season, so his return to Auburn shouldn’t be a huge surprise. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound offensive guard from Hogansville, Ga., will be heavily recruited by Alabama, Georgia, Clemson and Auburn, which are the three other schools most likely to be involved for Jones.
Humphries was referenced in last week’s offensive line 2019 positional analysis piece. He visited over the weekend and will be one of many offensive tackles to visit this spring as the Tigers try to shore up a position it missed on several times during the 2018 cycle. Humphries holds other SEC offers from Georgia and South Carolina, but his recruitment is in the earlier stages.
Puckett told SEC Country he “enjoyed it” on his first visit to the Plains. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound wide receiver from Griffin, Ga., has picked up recent offers from Ohio State and Texas A&M. There will be a lot of buzz around Puckett in the weeks and months to come. The Tigers tried to get out ahead by hosting him on a visit this weekend.
Mikel Jones is yet another IMG Academy prospect to visit Auburn this cycle. The Tigers’ efforts with the Bradenton, Fla., athletic academy have picked up mightily in the 2019 class. Jones sent the following message to SEC Country about his initial visit to the Plains: “It was everything I expected and more. I’m happy I got to speak with the coaches. I liked every one of them.”
There will likely be more in-depth updates on these five prospects throughout the week.
Setting stage for next Auburn recruiting weekend
As mentioned above, it’s about to be a busy time in for Auburn football, especially recruiting.
The Tigers are set to host their second junior day of the spring.
Auburn spring practice officially starts Thursday. There will likely be a few visitors on campus for the kickoff of that. It will jumpstart a month filled with practices, scrimmages, spring games — and, the kicker for all of it, recruiting visits.
This weekend Auburn will play host to dozens of prospects, built around its second spring practice. It will be much like its previous junior day on Feb. 3, but visitors will have a front-row seat for the Tigers’ second practice. The final home basketball game conveniently falls on the same day, a chance at redemption against South Carolina. Gus Malzahn and the football program have utilized the basketball team to their recruiting gain for most of the spring already.
There will be plenty of recruits to preview heading into Thursday, this weekend and the rest of the next month. Let this be your keep-an-eye-out disclaimer.
