Auburn sports: What’s weekend look like for Tigers?

Auburn Tigers-Auburn-Auburn football

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

What’s going on at spring practice

The A-Day countdown continues. Auburn football has been back in action this week and several players spoke to media for the first time in a while on Thursday afternoon at the athletics complex.

As important as workouts have been to this point, Saturday is a big day for coach Gus Malzahn’s football team. Auburn will have one of its spring scrimmages and the reports that come out of that morning are critical for players hoping to propel themselves into the summer.

While media is getting some viewing windows, here’s another look at what Auburn is up to in its spring workouts:

Battle of Cats

Auburn baseball is hitting the road and taking on another top 10 opponent, this time in Lexington, Ky.

The Wildcats are currently ranked No. 6 in the country and have a loaded roster. They boast some of the best pitching in the nation and impressive power at the plate. Even with all the talent, Kentucky is 0-3 in SEC play after losing three games to Arkansas.

Butch Thompson’s team is 19-3 after losing its Sunday game to Texas A&M. Still, Auburn has been rolling. Plainsman Park has been good to the Tigers, but now it’s time to prove they can win consistently on the road.

And vice versa

While baseball treks to Kentucky, Auburn softball will host Kentucky at Jane B. Moore Field this weekend.

Last weekend, the Tigers topped Alabama with a thrilling walk-off hit and earlier this week Mickey Dean’s team moved up to No. 11 in the nation. Kentucky isn’t too far behind at No. 19 and Auburn needs to stay focused in another conference series.

Softball’s midweek matchup against Alabama State resulted in a lot of power at the plate. The Tigers would love to keep that going this weekend against Kentucky in front of another great home crowd.

Tweet of the day

Also of note, none of the Auburn players have taken the risk of calling Malzahn grandpa yet … yet.
