Baker Mayfield on 2018 Oklahoma football team: ‘They have all the talent in the world’

Oklahoma football will be without some of its biggest stars from the 2017 season when the team takes the field this fall.

No departure stands out more than the man who has taken snaps for the Sooners the last three seasons — Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Kyler Murray, who served as Mayfield’s backup in 2017, is expected to take over as Oklahoma’s primary signal caller in 2018. The Oklahoma offense will also have talent to replace at tight end and on the offensive line, respectively, after the departures of Mark Andrews and Orlando Brown.

But for all the new faces, Mayfield isn’t concerned about the future of Oklahoma football as Lincoln Riley embarks on his second season as the team’s coach.

“They have all the talent in the world,” Mayfield said in a recent Q&A with the team. “People talk about the talent they lost, but it’s not about that. OU will always have talent. It’s about how you play together.”

Mayfield went on to praise Murray’s versatility as he passes the torch along to another quarterback aspiring to go down among the Oklahoma greats.

From Mayfield:

“If Kyler Murray wins the quarterback job, you’re going to have the most talented guy, athletically, in the country playing quarterback. You’re not going to find a better run/pass combo guy than Kyler. You’ve got the athletes. All the running backs are back and you have more talent coming in. You’ve got the receivers. You’ve got a lot of experienced offensive linemen in the program, which is important. The big thing will be leadership — how they play together and leadership.”

Murray was originally recruited by Texas A&M as a 5-star prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings. He transferred out of College Station, however, after his freshman season in 2015. He sat out a year in 2016 due to NCAA transfer policies before becoming the primary backup quarterback at Oklahoma in 2017. He made one start — vs. West Virginia in the team’s final home game of the year — after Mayfield was benched for a series because of his antics at Kansas.

Now, it will likely be his turn to take center stage for an entire fall. He’ll be joined by a 2018 Oklahoma recruiting class that ranks in top 10 in the nation, per the 247Sports composite rankings.

Oklahoma kicks off the season with a home game vs. Lane Kiffin and the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sept. 1. The Sooners host Chip Kelly and the UCLA Bruins one week later as non-conference play continues.
