Baker Mayfield isn’t backing off his trash talk from before the Baylor game, shocking no one who has followed his career.
When asked about his pregame verbal spats, Mayfield said, “This game is not soft. It’s not meant for soft people, it’s a violent game. It’s meant to be played with an edge,” according to DieHards’ Joe Buettner.
It’s not a shock that Mayfield said this, and it definitely isn’t an uncommon opinion. Football is as close to a bloodsport as we’re going to get in the modern era of sport. You have to have highly specialized equipment to do it safely, you can’t exactly get a regulation game going with your friends on the weekend, and it revolves around inflicting and managing pain better than the other team.
Baker Mayfield is absolutely correct. It’s a highly emotional game, and motivation is sometimes what wins you games. You gain an advantage on the field for being more violent than the others. If Mayfield’s trash talking is motivating his teammates, then it’s fair game, no matter what anyone thinks of him after the fact.
