Big 12 ranks third among Power Five conferences

The relative strength of the Big 12 has been a running joke across college football in recent years.

But to this point in the season, a turnaround has been seen in the national rankings of the Power Five conferences.

According to the most recent Sagarin ratings, the Big 12 ranks third among all conferences.

Here’s a look at how Sagarin ranks the conferences this week. Those conferences with two divisions were added together. In order to get the Big 12 to that average, the conference’s ranking was doubled to get to a comparable score.

How the conferences rank:

Here’s a look at how the conferences rank so far this season.

1. ACC 78.59
2. Pac-12 78.42
3. Big 12 78.37
4. Big Ten 78.10
5. SEC 77.64

The rankings should raise slightly for the SEC because of their “body-bag” weekend of soft non-conference opponents later in the season. The rest of the Power 5 schools will play inside their conferences the rest of the way.

But it underscores that the Big 12 has improved. And its chances appear strong for more improvement once bowl games begin in December.
