Bob Stoops among top bets to be next Tennessee head coach for some reason

Bob Stoops says he’s done coaching, but that isn’t keeping oddsmakers from associating his name with possible head coaching openings.

The former Oklahoma head coach is one of the top six bets to take the Tennessee job if Volunteers coach Butch Jones gets fired this season, according to Bet Online. Stoops is currently listed at +900. That means someone who puts $100 on Stoops would make $900 if he took the job.

The favorite right now is former San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly at +325. Here are the 14 coaches with odds on Bet Online.

  • Chip Kelly +325
  • Jeff Brohm +450
  • Bobby Petrino +450
  • Mike Norvell +750
  • PJ Fleck +800
  • Bob Stoops +900
  • Tee Martin +900
  • Les Miles +1000
  • Jim Bob Cooter +1800
  • Dan Mullen +1800
  • Jon Gruden +2000
  • Brian Kelly +2500
  • Peyton Manning +10000
  • Lane Kiffin +10000

Stoops retired as the head coach Oklahoma in June and  has been adamant that he won’t be coming back to the sidelines, either in college football or the NFL. He reiterated that this week to DieHards’ Tim Griffin.

“I will say, regardless of what you might hear out there in the papers, if I intended again to coach that would have been part of my statement [when I stepped down at Oklahoma],” Stoops said. “I would have said I’m stepping away here now for this time for myself, but when it comes to the next year or two, I look forward to getting back in it.

“But that’s not what I said. You won’t see me on a college sideline or a pro sideline. A lot of people act like they know, and there will be more than a few jobs out there. But that isn’t at all what I’m looking to do.”

It should say something that Lane Kiffin, Les Miles, Jon Gruden and Peyton Manning are all on this list as well.

There’s still serious animosity between the Vols and Kiffin after he bolted for the USC job following his only season in Knoxville. Les Miles couldn’t get anybody to hire him last fall, and lots of programs were hiring. Gruden has been rumored for almost every significant job opening in college for years, and Manning has no coaching experience.

Needless to say, don’t put money on any of those guys taking the Tennessee job, and don’t put it on Stoops either.
