Boston College-Central Michigan preview
Boston College kept hanging around in its Week 4 game against Clemson. Entering the fourth quarter, the Eagles were tied with the defending champs, 7-7.
But Clemson exploded for 27 unanswered points and sent the Eagles to their third straight defeat.
Boston College coach Steve Addazio has been mentioned as a potential coach on the hot seat due to his team’s 1-3 start, but he said in his Wednesday teleconference that his team will take confidence from the fact that they played the Tigers so close.
That could benefit the Eagles as they enter a much easier matchup in Week 5: a home game against Central Michigan.
Boston College’s struggles through the first four weeks have largely resulted from an ineffective offense. The Eagles are averaging just 15 points per game this season, which ranks 120th nationally and second-worst among all Power-5 conference teams, ahead of only Florida State.
Boston College also ranks tied for 120th in the country in turnovers. The Eagles have turned the ball over 10 times this season, on 8 interceptions and 2 lost fumbles.
The Eagles’ defense has been better than its offense, though not by much. Boston College has been very effective against the pass, allowing an average of just 147.5 yards per game through the air. That ranks 14th-best in the nation.
But the Eagles have been terrible against the run, giving up over 294 yards per game on the ground. That is third-worst in the FBS. In Week 3, Boston College gave up 515 yards rushing to Notre Dame.
Fortunately for Addazio’s team, Central Michigan has passed the ball more effectively than it has rushed this season. The Chippewas are averaging 306.3 yards on 44 attempts per game through the air so far, while rushing for an average of 147.8 yards on about 39 attempts per game.
Defensively, Central Michigan has struggled, especially in its last two games — both losses. Against Syracuse in Week 3, the Chipppewas allowed 41 points and 579 total yards. Facing Miami (OH) last week, they gave up 31 points.
Overall, Central Michigan seems to be trending in the wrong direction. The Chippewas followed season-opening wins over Rhode Island and Kansas with back-to-back losses by an average of over 20 points.
