Though Alabama and Clemson appear to be the season’s best teams, there’s some debate about the next teams ready to fill in the final two playoff spots.
CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm has Oklahoma as the third team in to the College Football Playoff. His fourth is from the Big Ten, but it’s not Penn State. The Nittany Lions are No. 4 and unbeaten at 5-0, but Palm thinks Ohio State will make the final four — again.
Judging by Palm’s story, he’s thinking Ohio State getting Penn State at home could be the difference.
The Buckeyes are projected to be the Big Ten champion — Penn State still has to go to Columbus, Ohio — and the new No. 4 playoff seed.
That prediction probably won’t sit well with Nittany Lions fans. Penn State beat Ohio State last season, won the Big Ten East and then won the Big Ten Championship Game — yet the Buckeyes were picked for the College Football Playoff. Ohio State lost to Clemson, 31-0, in the semifinals. Penn State lost a thriller to USC in the Rose Bowl.
