When Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster tries to scour the history of his time with the program, it requires searching back nearly 32 years. So you can excuse him if it takes him a second to remember or if he can’t provide exact details.
Like when Foster looks back at the history of his linebacking corps and tries to remember if he’s ever had to replace as much as he will this offseason after losing the top five players on the depth chart at the position.
“As I look back, I’m sure there’s been some time when we’ve had to replace some quality players like we’re having to replace right now,” Foster said according to Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times. “I don’t know if we had to replace as many. I’m talking backups and everything. So I don’t know if we’ve had that, if I’ve had that situation, but I do know we’ve had to replace some good players with some younger players and we’re going to have to do that now.”
The Hokies lost three-year starter Andrew Motuapuaka and potential top-10 pick Tremaine Edmunds while seeing their depth ravaged by graduation. This spring, they’ll only have seven listed linebackers on their roster, but they’ll add two more scholarship linebackers this summer and Foster seems optimistic that will be enough to form a competitive room.
“I’m excited about this group of kids though. I really am,” Foster said. “I think they’re a talented group. It’s going to be extremely competitive, which is a healthy thing for our program, I mean, to have some depth. We do have some numbers as far as depth goes. Now I’m hoping that will separate itself out.
“But I’m excited about this group of kids. They’re willing. They’ve worked hard. Their weight room numbers have been impressive, how they’re approaching things in the early morning workouts and their effort.”
Ultimately, talented or not, the group is remarkably inexperienced and expecting them to seamlessly transition into important roles held by experienced and talented players like Motuapuaka and Edmunds isn’t realistic. But Foster will undoubtedly be looking to see hunger as they fight for plenty of available playing time with spring football underway.
