Forget the Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos and the New York Jets when it comes to potential landing spots for quarterback Baker Mayfield this April.
One mock draft has the reining Heisman Trophy winner going to a franchise that just made the NFL Playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades this past season.
CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson had the Buffalo Bills trading up for the No. 5 pick to land Mayfield in his latest mock draft. Denver currently owns the pick, while the Bills are at No. 21 in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Despite a return to the postseason during the 2017 campaign, Wilson wrote that Buffalo needs a new quarterback after not being impressed with either of its signal callers last season, and that Mayfield is just the franchise quarterback Buffalo could use.
“The Bills, who were so unimpressed with Tyrod Taylor last season that they benched him for unproven rookie Nathan Peterman in Week 11 only to reinsert Taylor back into the lineup at halftime after Peterson threw five interceptions, are officially in the market for a franchise passer, and they’ll use one of their two first-round picks to land him. And for our purposes here, we have the Bills trading the No. 21 pick in 2018 plus a future first-round pick to Denver for the right to move up to the fifth-overall pick.”
The 2018 NFL Draft will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas from April 26-28. Mayfield told reporters on Monday that he will not be attendance, as he will be with his family in his hometown of Austin, Texas during the event.
Mayfield has steadily improved his draft stock over the course of the offseason. Several pundits have him as the potential No. 1 overall pick, including Pro Football Focus’ Steven Palazzolo and SB Nation’s Dan Kadar.
In just more than two months, football fans will find out if Mayfield is headed to a predictable destination such as Cleveland, or if a sleeper franchise such as Buffalo winds ups landing one of the most prized prospects in the 2018 NFL Draft.
