The West Virginia Mountaineers haven’t been troubled much thus far in the NCAA Tournament through two rounds.
After dispatching Murray State 85-68 in the first round, the Mountaineers blew past in-state rival Marshall 94-71 in the second round. West Virginia has a tough contest ahead against 1-seed Villanova, but so far, coach Bob Huggins and company have been one of the most impressive teams in the tournament.
So when CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander ranked the Mountaineers No. 8 in his reseeding of the NCAA Tournament, he did so with some trepidation.
“The fact I have the Mountaineers eighth has me doubting myself,” Norlander wrote. “While “Press Virginia” gets a lot of chatter for its defense, the truth is this team has been better with the ball than without it this season. It beat Virginia this season, one of only three teams to do so. It is in the top half of the remaining 16 teams. Senior point guard Jevon Carter is not going out quietly.”
Carter has been even better than advertised through the first two rounds. He averaged 24.5 points, 6.5 assists and 5 steals in the first two games, and his matchup against Villanova’s Jalen Brunson in the Sweet 16 should be a must-watch. If the rest of West Virginia can keep playing at a high level, the Mountaineers should continue to exceed expectations.
