Chris Beard is glad Keenan Evans is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
Beard said on College Hoops Today with Jon Rothstein that he thinks Evans is an “elite” college basketball player, a label he generally avoids putting on anyone. But he said Evans has earned it.
“He’s an elite player,” Beard said. “I don’t use that word a lot. I think there are a lot of good players. When you start getting up into that ‘great’ category, to me it’s all about consistency. Like every guy on our team has had huge games for us, as has every other player in the country. But guys like Keenan, they just find a different level of consistency.
“He started finding that during his junior year, where he became an all-conference player in the Big 12. To me that really put him on the map of the best players in college, and then certainly an NBA player one day. And then this year he just continued that consistency while being guarded by the other team’s best player, while being game planned for every night. He just found a level of play that only a few guys in the country find.”
Evans leads Texas Tech in scoring at 17.8 points per game this season. He also helped the Red Raiders finish second in the Big 12 in the regular season. If not for a toe injury near the end of the year, they may have won the league and kept Kansas from winning its 14th straight conference title.
The senior guard has been excellent through the first two games of the NCAA Tournament as well, averaging 22.5 points and shooting 58.3 percent from the floor. That’s created some buzz in the national media.
“For the longest time, nobody was talking about Keenan Evans,” Beard said.
That’s not the case anymore. And if he puts on another show against Purdue and gets Texas Tech to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history, plenty more people will be talking about him.
Texas Tech plays Purdue at 8:57 p.m. CT on Friday at TD Garden in Boston. The game will be televised on TBS.
