One pundit crushed the idea of Tim Tebow appearing in the major leagues with the New York Mets.
On Thursday, The Rich Eisen Show interviewed SiriusXM analyst Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, who’s known to have colorful opinions about a variety of sports topics. Eisen talked baseball with Russo and raised the possibility of the former Florida quarterback providing offense for the Mets this summer. Tebow is participating in spring training with the Mets, and New York general manager Sandy Alderson recently made a prediction that the former Gators star will appear in the majors.
To Russo, that idea is “ridiculous.” He even compared Tebow’s experience with the Mets to “a carnival act.”‘
“Tebow, now, is going to be in the major leagues? That’s ridiculous. What is this? A carnival act?” Russo told Eisen. “Here’s when I’ll take the Mets seriously about Tebow: When they disallow him to work with the SEC Network with college football. [When they say,] ‘I want you in Arizona in the Instructional League.’ That’s when I’ll take them seriously. [When they say,] ‘I want you in Port St. Lucie training. I don’t want you doing games on the weekends with the SEC.’ That’s when I’ll take the Mets seriously that they think Tebow can go out there and help them.”
That’s a strong take from Russo, but he makes some sense. Frankly, it wouldn’t be stunning to see Tebow appear with the Mets during the regular season this summer. But would such an appearance be more than a publicity stunt? And if Tebow does play for New York, can he stay with the team for more than a brief time?
You have to admire Tebow’s attempt to make a name for himself in baseball after his Heisman Trophy-winning career at Florida and a brief appearance in the NFL. But you can understand why some observers are skeptical about the whole Tebow-Mets experiment. It’s hard to imagine Tebow giving up his role with SEC Network soon, too.
