The undefeated Clemson Tigers remained at No. 2, behind Alabama, in the Week 6 Amway Coaches poll released by USA Today on Sunday.
Five Atlantic Coast Conference teams made the list.
Clemson, which received six first-place votes, improved to 5-0 with an impressive 31-17 win at Virginia Tech on Saturday night. The Tigers became the first team ever to have three wins over top-15 teams in the month of September.
“We played really well in all three phases,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “It was a complete effort by our team. It was key that we won the turnover margin. Defensively, the effort was tremendous. The story of the game was turnovers and that we controlled the line of scrimmage. Our defense takes a lot of pride in playing for each other.”
The reigning national champions were ranked fifth in the preseason coaches poll, though the Tigers did receive seven first-place votes.
Clemson jumped up two spots to No. 3 (with three first-place votes) after beating Kent State 56-3 in the season opener, then climbed another spot to No. 2 (with two first-place votes) after defeating Auburn 14-6 in Week 2.
The Tigers stayed at No. 2 after taking down Louisville 47-21 on the road in Week 3. They followed up that victory with the win over Boston College and then another tough road win at Virginia Tech. The Hokies fell seven spots in the coaches poll with the loss.
Next up for the Tigers is a home game against Wake Forest (4-1), which lost to visiting Florida State 26-19 on a late touchdown pass Saturday.
